The Sony FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS lens offers the range of a super-telephoto lens in an ultra-lightweight format, combining the optical precision of the G Master series with exceptional portability for a 400mm fixed focal length lens. Thanks to its high-speed autofocus, advanced internal stabilization and weather-resistant design, this lens is optimized for freehand use in any situation, from the fringes of a football field to nature photography deep in the forest.

Optimized for freehand use

This 400 mm f/4.5 lens avoids the traditional size and weight disadvantages associated with super telephoto equipment, facilitating its transport during freehand shooting days and guaranteeing the necessary range in any situation.

Its maximum aperture of f/4.5 allows to reduce the size and weight of the lens without significantly compromising the light collection capacity, especially when combined with the OSS system.

Thanks to the use of a single front element, the center of gravity moves towards the body of the camera, achieving a balanced design and ideal for freehand shooting.

With a length of only 9.5 inches (approx. 24 cm) and a weight of 2.2 pounds (approx. 1 kg), this lens more closely resembles a 70-200mm f/2.8 than a conventional fixed-focus supertelephoto lens. Compared to the FE 400mm f/2.8 model, this f/4.5 version weighs 4.2 pounds (approx. 1.9 kg) less and is 4.6 inches (approx. 11.7 cm) shorter.

High-speed AF and powerful OSS system

Designed for speed, precision, and reliability, the focus and stabilization systems make this lens perfect for capturing sports and wildlife without the need for a tripod.

Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors generate fast and responsive autofocus performance, as well as quiet and fluid. The focusing system supports continuous shooting speeds (in both photography and video) of up to 120 fps.

It allows manual focus override at any time and uses an internal focus design that maintains the total length of the lens during use, further favoring a faster focusing speed.

A focus range limiter and four focus lock buttons offer greater control over AF response, ensuring you never miss a shot.

The advanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system ensures sharp images when shooting freehand. It has three modes: standard (Mode 1), scan (Mode 2) and moving subjects (Mode 3).

G Master optical performance

Sony's G Master designation is reserved exclusively for lenses that offer maximum sharpness, a smooth *bokeh* effect, fast response, and outstanding overall performance. The customizable function ring allows you to control various camera and exposure settings.

The intuitive layout of the controls places the frequently used buttons and switches in easily accessible places on the lens body, allowing adjustments to be made without taking your eyes off the viewfinder.

Its dust and moisture resistant design includes rubber gaskets at all joints and a sealing ring on the frame, allowing it to be used in adverse weather conditions.

The front element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil and other contaminants, thus facilitating the cleaning of the lens.

The front thread for 95 mm filters allows you to easily attach threaded filters for greater creative control.

Its hybrid construction combines metal and plastic components to balance durability and portability.

Compatibility with teleconverters

The FE 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS lens is compatible with Sony FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters (sold separately). These teleconverters allow all autofocus and exposure functions to be maintained. Using them, focal lengths and effective apertures of 560 mm f/6.3 and 800 mm f/8, respectively, are obtained.
